Endermologie, also known as Lipomassage, is a completely different approach to creating a slimmer body contour. Instead of the traditional forms of weight loss, such as diet and exercise, or the more extreme measures that are found in surgical procedures, Lipomassage offers the appearance of a leaner form by massaging out the cellulite. The procedure is conducted using a device with rollers that is used across the surface of the skin to tighten, firm, and create a slimmer effect overall. Endermologie is said to work on areas that diet, exercise and surgical procedures don’t treat particularly effectively. The company promises that Endermologie will provide “faster and more targeted results.”

The tools used to perform Endermologie vary slightly based on the area of the body that will be worked on. Cellulite is, to the modern, figure-conscious woman, one of the more difficult problems to beat. Liposuction, the concept of removing fat cells by mechanical agitation and suction, is currently one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed worldwide. Up to now, liposuction has been the only effective method of removing those unsightly fat deposits that no amount of dieting and exercise will budge.

Previously, a woman’s main weapon in the cellulite battle has been jars of expensive creams, which claim to melt away unsightly ‘orange-peel’ skin. But that has changed with the latest non-surgical cellulite treatment technology technology from France, available in South Africa since 1998. This technique is known as  ENDERMOLOGIE®.

This non-invasive system is designed to reduce the appearance of cellulite and improve skin tone without pain or inconvenience. ENDERMOLOGIE® was used initially to treat scars in patients who had suffered burns, to soften the scars and improve elasticity and mobility of the scarred skin. An additional, unexpected benefit was soon noted; an improvement in the appearance of cellulite. ENDERMOLOGIE® has been approved by the FDA in the USA. Since being launched there , patients have been queuing up for what has been described as the ‘most exciting breakthrough in body contouring since the invention of liposuction by a French surgeon, Dr Y Illouz’.  Dr Illouz currently uses

ENDERMOLOGIE® in conjunction with liposuction, to smooth, tone and decrease post-operative swelling. A number of plastic surgeons are offering ENDERMOLOGIE® as an alternative to liposuction , for those patients who feel more comfortable with a non-invasive procedure.

LPG Systems describes how the technique works. ‘ENDERMOLOGIE® utilizes aspiration, produced by a vacuum pump, to suck the skin up between two motorized rollers into a fold or pleat. This fold is then kneaded by the two rollers attached to the treatment head. Because the suction level is electronically controlled, the rollers constantly adjust themselves to the thickness of the patient’s skin. Aside from Endermologie, none of these treatments have been formally studied in the pre-marketing approval (PMA) process of the FDA.

Patients like Endermologie.  If doctors properly set their client’s expectations and a miracle cure is not promised, satisfaction rates are typically 80-95%.  Dr. Brian Kinney likes this technology, too.  Dr. Brian Kinney M.D. recommends this procedure to his clients in several circumstances:

1) Pre- and post-operative “cosmetic physical therapy” following liposuction, facelifts, breast surgery and others
2) To soften and subjectively improve scars from old or recent surgery
3) To remove fluid from swollen tissues and to massage the lymphatic drainage channels
4) To firm and tone the connective tissue in and just under the skin.

Endermologie is a valuable part of the overall package of firming, toning, reducing swelling, speeding recovery after surgery, softening scarred or healing tissues and temporarily improving the appearance of cellulite.

In Doctor Brian Kinney’s experience, patients tend to heal a bit faster, have less swelling and pain, and the tissues smooth and firm better when the treatment is post surgery rather than on old scars.  Depending on the plastic surgeon, some doctors charge for Endermologie after surgery, and some do not.  For soft scars, it works well and often rapidly within a few weeks.  For old scars, it has a lower chance of being effective and takes longer, but it’s worth a short trial.

The ability for Endermologie to drain lymphatic fluids has been proven in several rigorous scientific studies.  Brian Kinney M.D. and others see Endermologie work very well in this setting.  Firming and toning the connective tissue helps to improve cellulite and this is the most challenging goal.  It is achieved temporarily in more than ¾ of patients.  However, once or twice a month maintenance procedures, combined with proper diet, exercise, and nutrition to maintain proper weight are required for maximum results.  According to Doctor Brian M. Kinney, if patients actively participate in the process, the results will be better and the patient will be more satisfied with the outcome.

Endermologie Treatments

Endermologie is a non-invasive cellulite treatment using deep massage and suction to “shrink” the fat cells responsible for cellulite. This mechanical massage technique increases blood and oxygen flow to tissue where cellulite resides, theoretically stimulating the metabolism of fat cells in that area. Fluids from the massaged cells are naturally absorbed and removed during urination. This causes the cells to be temporarily reduced in size.

The Endermologie technique originated in France’s plastic surgery community and is FDA-approved for the temporary reduction of cellulite. It is frequently used in combination with traditional liposuction.

What can I expect during an Endermologie treatment?

During an Endermologie treatment, your physician will set a mechanical roller to massage the treatment area. A suction device will pull gently on the massaged skin to smooth and remove cellulite dimpling. While most patients find the sensation — much like that of a deep tissue massage — to be pleasant, patients who are especially sensitive to pain should speak to their physician. The intensity of the massage can be effectively adjusted for your comfort.

It is important to be properly hydrated when undergoing the Endermologie procedure. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water should be sufficient, and the same level of hydration should be maintained for several weeks after treatment to help flush out the fluids created by the procedure.

How long does it take?

Endermologie sessions rarely exceed 45 minutes, but there is no down time — at most, you will experience some brief soreness. Most patients will need anywhere from 10 to 20 such sessions to achieve optimal results. As with all cellulite treatments, the effects are temporary — follow-up sessions will need to be scheduled to maintain results.

FAQ

How many sessions before I see results?
The average women will need 14 to 20 treatments to achieve optimal results. Treatments are generally 35 minutes in duration, twice a week. Once a month follow-up treatments are recommended to maintain results.

How long do the results last?
For several months up to a few years, depending on age, lifestyle, and hormonal changes. Once-a-month maintenance sessions are recommended after completion of the initial sessions, which maintains the results and keeps the toxins and abnormal fluid from building back up in the connective tissues.

How long does a session last? Do you just work on my problem areas?
